Association of Dachau Galleries and Museums
In 1981 the Dachau municipal and district authorities founded the Zweckverband Heimatmuseum Dachau e.V. (Local History Association) to ensure the preservation of the paintings and folkloristic objects from the Dachau region. In 1985 the Gemäldegalerie was reopened in Konrad-Adenauer-Straße 3 and in 1987 the Bezirksmuseum in the former Finance Office in Augsburger Straße 3. After recruiting expert staff in 1989, the two houses began to present temporary exhibitions on a regular basis. In 1992 the decision was made to rename the association Zweckverband Dachauer Galerien und Museen. The occasion for this was the incorporation in the association of the Neue Galerie Dachau, a museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art. The office of the presidency alternates, every three years, between the mayor of Dachau and the commissioner of the Dachau district.
In 1996 the association became a founding member of the working group Country Outing – Museums around Munich and has been a member of EuroArt and the European Federation of Artists’ Colonies since 1998.
